The requirements for a successful application are a university degree with an above-average grade in one of the subjects participating in the PhD program and a convincing project proposal.
The selection is made on the basis of the written documents. Selection criteria are the quality and viability of the proposed PhD project, the willingness and ability of the candidate to tackle interdisciplinary theoretical and methodological questions for the purpose of the PhD program, as well as the previous performance of the candidate in his or her studies and in examinations.
Each applicant who is admitted to the program is assigned a personal mentor from the group of participating professors who is responsible for the supervision of the dissertation.

- Curriculum vitae with a detailed description of the academic career of the applicant
- Certified copies of all diploma and degree certificates from schools and universities
- A copy of the thesis
- Letters of recommendation from two professors
- A list of publications, if applicable
- An outline of the planned PhD project (max. 5 - 10 pages)
- Good German language skills (level B2)
The minimum grades for applications are as follows: Magister Artium thesis, master’s degree thesis or diploma thesis or thesis for admission to the state examination (Staatsexamen) with at least the grade “good”, state examination for primary and secondary school teachers with at least the overall grade “good”, or an equivalent international degree.
